Moving Trash & Recycling

Manage the waste from your move
The amount of trash generated by a household can sometimes be enormous. Besides the obvious cardboard boxes headed for the heap, many people find it easier to throw items away then to move them. A little planning and conscientious effort will lessen the environmental blow your move makes.
Corrugated Cardboard
Dinners and partiesAsk your moving company if they would like the boxes back for reuse. If not, you can recycle corrugated cardboard boxes at the curb. The boxes must be flattened to 2 feet by 2 feet and tied into manageable bundles with string or twine. This allows the recycling crew to pick them up and fit them in the truck. If you prefer, you can also drop off corrugated cardboard for recycling.

We are sure there is a pizza box or two leftover from moving day. However, pizza boxes should not be put in with your cardboard recycling.
Packing Peanuts
Polystyrene packing peanuts cannot be recycled, but the UPS Store (The UPS Store locations only), and other mailing companies will gladly accept packing peanuts for reuse.

Biodegradable packing peanuts are now widely available. They are made from vegetable starches and are worth the few extra dollars. The peanuts dissolve harmlessly with the rain in a short time. (They are not recommended for storage use.)
Newsprint
Start saving newspapers a few weeks before your move. Items which can withstand the ink transfer like glass, glazed ceramic dishes (not porcelin) and metal can be wrapped with yesterday's news at no added expense. Unprinted newsprint can be purchased from your movers.

All newsprint can be recycled with other paper products at the curb as long as it isn't yellowed. If the newsprint has yellowed from age or from getting wet, please put it in your garbage bin.
Bubble Wrap
Bubblewrap cannot be recycled. Some mailing centers will receive undamaged bubble wrap for reuse. Please put it in your garbage bin otherwise.
Leftover Paint & Chemicals
If the previous owner has left chemicals such as paint, cleaning products, lawn care products, etc., in your new home, you should bring them free of charge to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility for safe disposal. Limits may apply per household. Contact your local facility through Earth911.com.
Extra Garbage
One man's trash is another's treasure. DONATE! Items in useable condition like furniture, clothing, kitchen wares, computers or your old car (TAX DEDUCTION!) can be brought to your local church, Goodwill, or Salvation Army. Large items usually will be picked up free of charge. Call 1-800-95-TRUCK for a Salvation Army pickup.

Of course, there's always Ebay too.

Garbage that doesn't fit in your garbage cart, when the lid is closed, is considered extra garbage. Some municipalities only pickup extra garbage on certain days. Bulky items may require additional payment for service.
